Providers & Protectors - Mural
‘காப்பாளர் & வழங்குநர்’ (‘Protectors and Providers’) in Tamil for St+art India Festival Chennai 2020 Titled ‘Protectors and Providers’, the mural is an homage to the dual role women play in the sustenance of an economy – both as providers and protectors of households and society. Drawing inspiration from the livelihoods of women in the fisherfolk communities of Chennai, the artist depicts a strong female character wearing a traditional Sari, holding a bowl of water encapsulating an entire universe within. The words ‘Protectors’ (காப்பாளர் - top) and ‘Providers’ (வழங்குநர் – bottom) written in a Tamil typeface frame her piece. Osheen felt a love for vibrant colours in South India and Chennai, the colour tones and elements of her mural reflect that palette. Using motifs that are local the artist leaves subtle cues in the artwork which draw influence from the local fisherman traditions - the ‘Kolam’ patterns as tattoos on the arms of her central subject, the Olive Ridley Turtle inspired earrings, the lush coconut tree block print on her saree, as well as her Marina coral inspired headgear. https://st-artindia.org/
